Daredevil is one of the most baller tv shows ever made.

Warning: it is insanely violent. And bloody. I mos def had to look away and skip around a bit. There's also a fair amount of language. And some of the episodes made me depressed.

Nevertheless, this show is absolute amaze-balls.

It's got it all
Daredevil is not just one show- it's eight shows. The vast majority of TV deals with one shtick per show. E.g., The Office is a mockumentary, Grey's Anatomy is a drama, 24 is action, The Flash is a superhero show... etc. They hone in on the same things over and over again.

Let me break down Daredevil for you.
  • Matt Murdock is blind. Already, an overcoming-challenges story is underway.
  • His dad was murdered by organized crime. Now maybe it's a revenge story.
  • He's a defense attorney. Crime series. Law and order. Let's go.
  • He's a devout Catholic. Bring on the religious ethical and moral dilemmas.
  • He's a superhero with crazy cool powers. Superhero show. Yeet.
  • He's a ninja. Action. More fighting. Sick.
  • He lives in Hell's Kitchen (NYC) which is loaded with organized crime and corruption. Self-explanatory.
  • He falls in love. And there's the drama.
You can quickly see how a show with this many compelling plot devices can't be boring.

There's no formula
And it's not. The crowning achievement of this show is that none of the episodes are identical. Some episodes center around action and are punch-drunk, while others don't have fight scenes at all and stay in the court room. Some episodes have character flashbacks, some don't. His Catholic priest appears in and out of episodes, but he's not some mentor character that give you a 'moral of the story' type sermon at the end of each episode; his role serves the story as needed, and as a result, make his presence on screen captivating and commanding. Some episodes don't even have Daredevil in it.
This kind of writing keeps you on your toes and you have zero idea about what could happen next or how it will be delivered.

I am very passionate about this level of storytelling (apparently?) so allow me drive home my point even further by giving you an example of the exact opposite. It's even from the D.C. universe: The Flash.
It used to be my favorite show. Honestly. But by the time season 2 wrapped up, it dawned on me that it was actually a pile of hot garbage because each episode is identical.
Here is each episode in 6 easy steps:
  1. A new bad guy appears in the city, does a bad thing.
  2. The Flash investigates the bad thing as a C.S.I., is totally dumbfounded by the weirdness of the crime scene.
  3. Bad guy appears again, the Flash shows up and gets defeated.
  4. Flash is sad about it with his friends in a weird laboratory, figures out how to defeat the bad guy with science while going through drama with his friends, is trapped in a love triangle probably.
  5. Bad guy appears again, The Flash defeats him with his new knowledge and the power of friendship (but he almost loses for a second!!)
  6. Cliffhanger about the overarching season mystery.
Repeat. It's cheap. And shallow and lifeless and boring. And the Flash deserves better than that, goshdarnit.

The Extra Mile
Daredevil is stankin' cinematic for it's levels of tricky camera-work, acting, and action sequences. It's one of those things that they didn't have to do, but because they went the extra mile and did some truly impressive filming, the show is unforgettable. Just take a peek at this single-shot action sequence.  I mean that's dope.
When it comes to acting quality, I usually don't pay attention to it. I'm just along for the ride. But when it's so good even I notice it?? That's when you know it's some good acting right thur.
Of great import: The camera guys are basically characters in this show, too. I don't really know what to say here other than they are not afraid to be daring with how they move the camera. Most TV is pretty unimaginative with camera work, but Daredevil explores what you can do with filming and it pays off big time. It makes watching the show more of an experience for me.

Anyway it's a masterpiece and worth a watch. I'd recommend watching it with me, as I know when all of the cringy scenes happen and I can skip them for you. Like you're own personal Vidangel.
